About the Foundation
At The Barbara Leatherwood Hope for a Tomorrow Foundation, we are driven by our mission to provide hope, guidance, and essential support to those affected by ovarian and gynecologic cancers. Founded in honor of Barbara Leatherwood, we are a Christ-centered organization committed to making a meaningful impact in the lives of women battling these challenging diseases.
Our Mission
Christian Comfort and Guidance
We understand that a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming and isolating. Our foundation is dedicated to offering Christian comfort and guidance to individuals and families in need. We believe that faith and community support can provide the strength needed during these difficult times.
Increasing Awareness
A key focus of our mission is to raise awareness about ovarian and gynecologic cancers. Many people remain unaware of the signs, symptoms, and critical nature of these diseases. We strive to educate our community on the importance of understanding these cancers, emphasizing that routine pap tests only detect cervical cancer, which can leave ovarian cancer undiagnosed until it reaches advanced stages.
Community Education
We are committed to enlightening our community about the realities of ovarian and gynecologic cancers. With someone diagnosed every 23 minutes and 1 in 78 women at risk, along with 80% diagnosed at late stages, spreading knowledge about these cancers is essential. We hold firmly to our guiding verse, Isaiah 40:31, which reminds us that “those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength,” empowering us to spread hope and education.
Assistance for Underinsured Women
Financial barriers can prevent many women from seeking the care they need. Our foundation is dedicated to assisting underinsured women who are at risk, ensuring they receive the medical attention and support necessary without the added burden of financial stress.
Educational Scholarships
We believe in investing in the future as a way to honor those affected by cancer. We provide educational scholarships to high school students and nursing students, empowering the next generation to make a difference in healthcare and cancer awareness.
The Challenge of Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer presents unique challenges, including one of the highest recurrence rates among cancers, making it difficult to treat effectively. Currently, there is no accurate test for early diagnosis, which exacerbates the issue. Our foundation aims to change this by promoting research and awareness initiatives that could lead to better diagnostic tools and treatment options.
